VOTE or die

leave a comment »

Just a friendly reminder to our fellow Canadian readers & bloggers to go out and vote today.  Let your voice be heard, and if you have never voted, it’s never too late to start!  I’m sure over the past few weeks I’ve been a little obnoxious encouraging my friends to vote, but hey, I’m from Ottawa (you know, the nation’s capital) so it’s pretty much in my blood.  I was born to vote, haha ok, cheesy, bye now!

VOTE & see you at the polls!

the wedding

leave a comment »

The Royal Wedding has finally come and gone.  No, I did not wake up at 4 am. I originally had every intention of doing so, but figured the internet, social networking sites and television broadcasts would keep me up to date at a reasonable hour.  Of course these sources did not fail.  It’s a weird thing to imagine having your entire wedding broadcasted and scrutinized online moment by moment.  So let’s get to it then…

THE DRESS: Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

This McQueen, fit for a future Queen, is such a classic dress, which I think completely suits Kate’s style.  Although she has already been deemed a style icon, working for a High Street fashion designer, I think her style is much more simple and classic, and less edgy and trendy.  This dress fits her style perfectly.  I only wish it was a little more modern, less sleeve and less ballgown, but I’m more of a fit-n-flare (Say Yes To The Dress anyone?) kind of girl.  Overall I think it’s perfectly paired for the traditional Royal Wedding agenda.

Another note, would be a bigger more vibrant bouquet.  I found it looking a bit wilted and more so camouflaged with the dress.  But then again the styling of the wedding was rather non-existent.

I’m sure the reception is bound to be much more exciting.  Ellie Goulding will be performing, as requested by Prince William, as she is the Royal couples favourite artist.  I also heard that Jay-Z & Beyonce were asked to perform “Bonnie & Clyde.”  Can you imagine Wills, Charles and Queen Elizabeth throwing their diamonds up!? Just outrageous (in my dreams this would happen), hears hoping.

hotel, motel, hollywood inn.

leave a comment »

That title may be a little lame, but suitable all the same. In early April developers had big plans of purchasing the land that is Mount Lee (home of the iconic Hollywood Sign) in hopes of building luxury mansions.  But it would appear that when Hollywood is in danger, all of America comes together to save the day.  April 30th was the deadline for a nonprofit land-conservation group to purchase the land and become the next Hollywood Hero.  With about $1 million dollars short, none other than Mr. Playboy donated $900,000 to preserve the sign.  This is the second time Hefner has helped to save the sign, having donated $500,000 32 years ago as well.

Anyways with all that said and done, architect Christian Bay-Jorgensen has proposed a new and interesting idea to preserve the sign: The Hollywood Hotel.  The hotel would offer 308 rooms and panoramic views of the hills.  Would you stay at the Hollywood Hotel?

reinventing the 3 Rs

with one comment

What do you do with your tattered, death-by-stain, or not-so-in-style clothing that can just no longer afford the rental space in your closet?  Have you ever thought your clothing could live a second life?  Well here’s an idea, what if every garbage day we rolled not only our blue, black and green bins out to the curb, but also maybe a pink bin as well.  I’m not saying it has to be pink, just an idea, but instead of throwing old garments in the trash how about recycling them?

Blame it on our materialistic generation who believes that bigger is better (meaning wardrobe size).  Yes, I will include myself in the many who over indulge and over consume.  Because of this, the average American throws away 54 pounds of clothing a year, for a total of 9 million tons of mostly still wearable, lightly used clothing.  The best option for the clothes you cannot bear to keep are consignment shops, second-hand stores and charities.  Maybe we could all become a little more crafty and take a tip from Preloved in reinventing and redesigning your wardrobe!

Recycling clothing is also becoming a trendy “green initiative” in the retail industry.  The Gap recently launched a campaign allowing customers to bring in an old pair of jeans and receive 30% off a new pair.  All 250,000 pairs of recycled jeans will be used for insulation in future projects.  Outdoor apparel retailer, Patagonia, currently offer 70% of their product line being made from recyclable materials or can be recyclable.  The company’s goal is to reach 100%, ensuring completely green merchandise.

Next time you go to throw your used clothing in the trash, remember “reduce, reuse, recycle!”

Why can’t these things ever happen to me?!  Just last week @ConanOBrien decided he was going to follow one random tweeter from the twitterverse:

And now in just under a week Sarah Killen‘s life really has changed!  @LovelyButton, Sarah’s twitter name, now has over 25,000 followers, and the newly engaged Sarah is receiving gifts from people all across the world wide web, including a wedding dress from New York designer, and an iMac desktop.

Even The Globe and Mail is writing about it, watch an interview with Sarah Killen HERE.  I’m thinking meeting Ludacris and being asked to appear on Good Morning America is just the start of this girl’s 15 minutes of fame.

p.s. follow Conan if you aren’t already, he’s very hilarious and very unemployed.

olympic FEVER!

leave a comment »

an inside look at the downtown Vancouver Olympic mayhem – pictures courtesy of my lovely cousin Becca, who resides in Van! thanks!

we’ve caught Olympic Fever…and if you are like us, here at GFB, you keep your tv on CTV all day long to keep up with the events.

it would appear that we aren’t the only ones who are completely obsessed with the Games either, because every night during the Olympics The Bay on Granville Street in downtown Vancouver is open til midnight to accomodate for late-night olympic shopping!  the line up stretches the entire city block (about an hour wait), and if you are lucky you will get in before all the goods are sold out!  even though the “Olympic Superstore” receives a new shipment every morning, the store sells out every night!  if you remember I reminded and warned you all to buy your Olympic merch prior to the Games starting, here’s hoping you listened.

i’m thinking i should start taking special orders for Olympic merchandise, since it’s still available here in Toronto…please inquire within.

for those of you who don’t live in Toronto, or just haven’t noticed, the CN Tower lights up gold when Canada wins a gold medal.  so thus far it’s been 4 times…hoping to see more golden skies soon.

in other celebration of winning gold, Air Canada has special one-day-only discounts!  on Feb 14th flights were 15% off and on Feb 16th 20% off. i’m not sure if the promo continued with yesterday’s win, but i’m predicting that the discount price will not continue to increase (because Air Canada is selfish and cheap), or that Air Canada doesn’t have much hope in the Canadian team, and figures 20-25% off is the most they will have to offer.
