Cat Eye Killers

Posted in Accessories, Fashion by goldfacedbetty on May 25, 2012

Cat eye sunglasses are such an iconic style –think Audrey window shopping on your average Wednesday afternoon. While I’m not really one for classic feminine styling, something about this shape is fairly edgy at the moment.

With the cat eye coming in so many shapes, colours and designs, this look is very versatile. So, whether you’re a twenty-something or a lady who lunches, there is a cat eye to suit you — just remember not to overwhelm your face with too large a style. I’m personally coveting these Elizabeth & James, dare I say they’re even a little sassy (I refuse to say sexy, sorry folks)?

Gifts for Mama

Posted in Shopping by goldfacedbetty on May 11, 2012

This week flew by and May 13th, i.e. Day of Mamas, is quickly approaching. While Mother’s Day for me is quite different since I no longer live in the same city as my parents, it’s still nice to make little gestures. I’m sure for my mom, Sunday will mostly be like any other, which is why I think it’s important to make the most of the time I do spend with my mom. Last weekend I was in Ottawa, so me and my mom spent the day brunching, shopping and visiting new baby cousins. Before returning to Toronto, we also strolled our neighbourhood, indulging in tacos from a new Mexican pop-up hut (literally) and homemade donuts. We also took in some vitamin D while lounging in the backyard.

Even if you won’t be with your mom this Sunday, sometimes a lengthy phone call is the best alternative. For those of you who are speding the day with mom, here are some last minute gift ideas.

Low in the Back

Posted in Fashion by goldfacedbetty on May 10, 2012

Right now, something about a low back seems very appealing to me. Maybe it’s the weather warming up and a seven day forecast that lives only in the 20s, either way I’m drawn to this style as of late. Although I’m fairly thin, a plunging back never really seemed to be something I thought I could pull off; it may be my fear of going sans bra, or it may be a certain insecurity to bare it all, something that I feel would only bring more attention to my small frame. Regardless, I really think this is something I’m going to try this summer! Have you taken the plunge yet?

Lana Del Rey Needs a Stylist

Posted in Celebrities, Fashion by goldfacedbetty on April 26, 2012

In theory Lana Del Rey is a babe, she’s the gangsta Nancy Sinatra, she has long locks and a pout to die for, sings about blue jeans, and was born Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. But let’s get real, her voice is dreamy and her songs transport you into a romantic, pin-up, old Hollywood fairy tale. My issue with Miss Rey is that while she looks amazing in her videos, styled as the ultimate old Hollywood glam hipster, her public appearance outfits are falling flat — she’s looking a little dull, mousy and matronly.

Lana Del Rey needs a stylist, and if you are her stylist, I’m sorry you should be replaced.

Watercolour Mini

Posted in Fashion, Fashion Friday, What I Wore by goldfacedbetty on April 20, 2012

With the weather playing tricks on us, it’s hard to know when your next summer-like day will be, so it’s best to take advantage of the sunshine, even if some people continue to sport wool and fur-linen hooded jackets. On a particularly hot day, I paired a new Forever 21 by Rory Beca pink watercolour mini with a tied Joe Fresh blouse. It was all very silky and very simple for a day that seemed like July.

Styled: Easy Peasy

Often I wake up and want to just throw something on, I can’t be bothered to think that much at 7am. Sincerely Jules is a blogger I look to when seeking easy looks. Her California style is laid back, and she’ll often pair more casual pieces, i.e. Converse, with skirts and dresses, which very much so appeals to my style. I recently bought a pair of white high-top Converse, and from checking out Jules on the daily, I only want to add more Chucks to my shoe collection…including these Missoni x Converse ones!

While this look takes an opposite approach, pairing a comfortable and casual look with a pair of pumps, I’m all about how easy peasy her styling is. I think we would be great friends.

The Little Things: Tiny Heart

Posted in Fashion, Shopping, Toronto by goldfacedbetty on April 15, 2012

Often, I walk by a cute store just west of Queen & Spadina — Dumuri, and occasionally I just may stop in. Today, I’m glad I did. With all merchandise imported from Korea, the products are too precious to pass up. Lately I’m loving dainty, thin rings, it’s a definite change from the fingerfuls of rings that everyone and their BFF, me included, wore from pinkie to thumb. This gold tiny heart ring is so cute and simple, I know it will be my new classic.

DIY: Tie Dye Denim

Posted in DIY, Fashion by goldfacedbetty on April 11, 2012

In effort to make DIY/crafting my new hobby, this weekend I successfully completed another amazing DIY. This project was even more fun because it involves fashion! The tie dye denim look is perfect for any pair of jeans that have lost their way in your closet and need to be revived. I know most of you have at least one pair of jeans you don’t wear — I have approximately 12 pairs of jeans, but mostly wear two or three.

What you’ll need:

  • dark denim
  • bleach
  • bucket
  • rubber bands
  • rubber gloves

First, soak your jeans in a bucket of water, this will ensure that your denim creates maximum absorbency.

Next tie jeans with multiple elastic bands. It’s recommended to use thick rubber bands, so since I was unable to find these, I used clothing elastic instead. Start at the legs and twist and tie denim with bands. The more rubber bands you use, the more blue that will be left.

Fill your bucket with 1 part bleach, 2 parts water. My bucket was filled about half-way full. Use rubber gloves to immerse the jeans in the solution and if needed use some sort of weight to keep the jeans completely immersed. This way you won’t have to rotate the denim. Check on the colour of the denim occasionally, I bleached my jeans for about 2 hours to achieve a light, almost white denim colour.

When you are satisfied with the bleached colour, carefully cut off all elastic bands, and wash jeans immediately. Be sure to wash alone and use detergent. Hang to dry, and you’re done! One last step is to put your washing machine through another wash cycle with nothing in it to ensure all bleach is cleared from the machine.

So excited to wear these all summer long! These pair perfectly with classic black and white t-shirts, flats and booties. Enjoy!

The Little Things: Leopard Glasses Case

Posted in Accessories, Shopping by goldfacedbetty on March 30, 2012

Sometimes it’s the little things that brighten up your day. In this case, a $5 Aldo Shoes Leopard Glasses Case is something that while small and fairly insignificant in the grand scheme of my wardrobe, has brought ease to my life. Not to mention it’s amazing leopard print, this case has allowed me to take my Michael Kors Sloan Sunglasses with me, without having to carry around the immense hard case provided (which literally takes up half or my purse).

Styled: Pastel Pink

Posted in Fashion by goldfacedbetty on March 28, 2012

To continue through the pastel rainbow that is this spring, let’s look at every girly-girl’s fave colour — pink. Once again coloured denim seems to be the best way to incorporate some of spring’s best hues. For pastel pink don’t be afraid to try a feminine dress, my default is to choose lace. Or, opt for a monochrome look that was ever so popular last year, this time try different shades of pink to create an ombré look. If you’re a little wary of the girly colour, work some accessories into your wardrobe (ostrich leather is a must), or paint on OPI Pink Friday to pretty up your tips!
