well well times are tough, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a couple of drinks and let loose, right? well i guess the lcbo workers almost believed that. last night the lcbo union (which I never knew existed) decided they were going to go on strike at 12am. so toronto, and the rest of the ontario population, made there way to the closest lcbo to raid the shelves, literally…

although i didn’t think the strike would really go on for that long, i decided it was best to be accompanied by a bottle of vodka for the next week. i had to be able to survive canada day at least. that being said i went to the lcbo on spadina only to find the smirnoff sold out, and only absolute left. fine, i took it.

first page of the metro: wednesday, june 24, the lcbo workers have decided they can come to an agreement (no more strike). haha hilarious.

was this a big ploy to achieve record sales? i’m convinced… sales on monday were $17-million! so for all of you who dug themselves deaper into debt, in fear of never drinking again… at least you can drink away your sorrows tonight.

all falls down..

leave a comment »

this holiday season it’s obvious that regular shoppers were holding back their holiday shopping spirit because of the economic crisis. as we mentioned earlier in December, most retail stores have been advertising major sales and discounted items, in hopes of persuading North Americans to continue shopping. more recently I saw an advertisement for 60% off Old Navy.

since the holiday shopping season is for the most part over, or maybe did not ever begin, many companies are releasing their retail sale numbers. MasterCard Advisors have calculated that this year across North America, women’s apparel sales have decreased by 23% from last year and men’s apparel sales have decreased by 14%.

it would appear that the retail industry was not on santa’s “nice” list, as their wish to regain lost annual sales over this holiday season was not granted…

desperate service?

with one comment

“Sales associates are peppering shoppers with questions about their holiday plans, taking their pictures, walking step-for-step with them through a store and, on a recent afternoon in Juicy Couture’s store in the West Village, even getting down on hands and knees to embrace a customer’s chihuahua.” – On the new in-store treatment from WWD.
The funny thing about this quote is that this is what we do at Aritzia every day, recession or not.

Tis the Season! (for conscious spending)

with 2 comments

In case the calendar did not inform you, the festive window displays  must have. Indeed the holiday season has arrived once again. This year, however, it may feel a little different at the local mall. Consumer confidence is at an all-time low, and conspicuous consumption has become a shopping faux pas.
What does this mean for retailers? Decreased luxury sales, shifts to lower priced stores, excess inventories, store closures, halted expansions.
What does this mean for shoppers? Big sales!! …but not if you shop at Abercrombie and Fitch).
