making sandcastles with sandbox magazine

Although I currently reside in Toronto, I will always be a Winnipeg girl at heart. Explaining Winnipeg to people I meet can sometimes be challenging. Often I get a lot of “Oh, that’s in Alberta, right?” or “OMG isn’t it soooo cold there?!” No, it’s in Manitoba (one province west of Ontario), and yes it is cold there right now (but our summers are also really hot).

Other facts about Winnipeg: we have some of the most affordable housing in Canada and one of the lowest unemployment rates, Winnipeg is one of the sunniest places in Canada, and it is the geographic centre of Canada (sorry Toronto, we win this one). What’s more, a lot of great people have come out of Winnipeg. On New Years Eve, a man told me that Winnipeg produces the most successful people per capita than any other city in Canada. Granted, I’m not sure where he got his facts, but it was still a delight to hear.

One group of Winnipeggers to watch right now are the boys over at Sandboxmag.com: Jeff Vallis and Braden Alexander. They had a vision to create a magazine that honours  “exactly what they feel makes life worth living: beautiful, confident women and everything they love, including fashion, lifestyle, arts, entertainment and culture”.  The magazine is written from the gays to the girls, which puts a unique perspective on the usual lady mags that are written primarily by women. Sandbox Magazine ties up everything that is currently cool about the city into a neat little online package. Check it out, you won’t regret it.
